How many rental car locations in the US?
I found that there were 19,643 car rental locations in the US in 2017. In 2016 there were 20,469, in 2015 there were 21,067, and in 2014 there were 21,498. While the number of locations is decreasing slightly year-on-year, the revenue is increasing, and the industry currently generates around $40 billion.
US CAR RENTAL INDUSTRY
In 2017, 75.14 million people rented a car in the US. That was an increase from 2016's 68.48 million. The US car rental market currently generates $40 billion in annual revenue, and is showing annual growth of 2.5%. It employs 143,255 people in 10,774 businesses.

The number of rental locations has decreased since 2016, when there were 20,469 locations. However, it seems that the revenue has increased. Therefore, there are fewer locations but each of these are generating more revenue. Going back to 2015 we find the same pattern, there were a greater number of locations (21,067) but these generated less overall revenue. Again, we see the same trend going back to 2014. More locations (21,498), but less revenue. Enterprise, Hertz and Avis remained the top companies, in terms of most locations, over these years.
CONCLUSION
Overall I have found that there are 19,643 car rental locations in the US. Over the past few years this number has decreased slightly, however revenue has increased. We also know that the number of people who are rented cars has increased, so we could assume that there are now more people renting from a reduced number of locations.
