Market Size - Carrot Agribusinesses: South America

While there is no publicly available information to fully develop a market size figure for the continent of South America and its carrot agribusinesses, the research team was able to pull together a few key findings about the market that may be of value. Below is an outline of the research strategies to better understand why the information requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into the findings.

South American Carrot Agribusinesses

  • Based on WorldAtlas, among the countries growing the most carrots and turnips in the world, none of the South American countries were listed among the top 25 growers of the world.
  • Carrots are one of the main crops in Argentina in South America.

Argentina

  • In Argentina, the growth pace for carrot production was the most rapid in 2009. Carrot and turnip production peaked in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2018, production failed to regain its momentum. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008.
  • In 2016, the average carrot and turnip yield reached its maximum level; however, from 2017 to 2018, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
  • Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
  • In general, the carrot and turnip harvested area continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017. Carrots and turnip harvested area peaked in 2018 and is expected to retain its growth in the near future.
  • From 2009 to 2018, carrot and turnip exports continued to indicate a drastic reduction.
  • The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, and reached the maximum in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, exports failed to regain their momentum.
  • Carrot and turnip imports, however, continue to indicate an outstanding increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017. Overall, carrot and turnip imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth.

Research Strategy:

Initially, we started searching for the market size of the carrots agricultural business industry in South America through agri-industry specific sources such as Lexology, Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, IIVR, Horti Daily, Johny Seeds, AgWeb, and others. Most of the sources were either specific to the global industry, the North America market, and others and provided information on the amount of production and not the number of businesses. No sources mentioned anything about the number of businesses present in South America.

As most of the sources did not talk about the South American agricultural industry for carrots, we decided to search for the number of businesses that grow carrots in each South American country including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Netherlands, and others. Our goal was to find data for all the South American countries and then add them up to get the total market size in terms of the number of agribusinesses for carrots in South America. So, we started searching for the number of carrot agribusinesses through the above-mentioned sources and a few others such as WorldAtlas, Maps of World, and others. These sources were mainly focused on providing data for production in place of the number of businesses. However, through this search, we were able to learn that none of the South American countries have been placed even among the top 25 countries that grow carrots in the world. Later we looked through relevant government databases and other sources such as FAO and others. These sources provided information specific to the production and producer price index but nothing about the number of carrot-related agricultural businesses in South America.

Our next strategy was to search through research papers and journals related to the agricultural industry such as the Journal of Advances in Agriculture, American Journal of Plant Sciences, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and others. Some of these were paid research with only the abstracts viewable. None of these sources mentioned any information related to the market size in terms of the number of agribusinesses for carrots in South America. However, we were able to find one of the recently published reports for Argentina titled "Argentina-Carrots And Turnips — Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends, and Insights". Although the data was behind paywalls, we could obtain some of the relevant details for the carrot production in Argentina and shared in helpful findings due to the absence of any other relevant details about the market size of carrot agribusinesses in South America. We also found a comprehensive report for Uruguay titled "Agricultural Market Opportunities in Uruguay" but this did not even mention anything about the carrot production in the country. So, it clearly shows that in South America carrots are not the main crop and therefore, a very limited—or even no data— is available about its production.

Through the above research strategies, we have learned that the South America market for carrots production is not leading compared to other regions of the world. As a result, we decided to look through research reports including Mordor Intelligence, IBISWorld, and others to see if any of them have mentioned the number of agribusinesses in South America, or any of the South American countries. We hoped that most of the times research reports such as IBISWorld mention the number of businesses in any specific industry. This would have helped know the number of businesses in the carrot agricultural industry. But we were unable to find any of the desired information. Most of these reports talked about the global production of carrots and that China is the leading producer and exporters.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Your research team scoured through mango industry reports, white papers, and authoritative agencies, as well as media sources like the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), MRC Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, IBISWorld, Grandview Research, Business Insider, and USA Today, PR Newswire for information on the total number of broccoli growing and processing businesses, and their breakdown into small, medium, and largest businesses based on their revenue or hectare cultivated. After a wide-reaching and thorough search, we were not able to find such information on the public domain.

We then proceeded to comb through agriculture industry directories like the Produce Market Guide and Fresh Plaza for lists of broccoli growing and processing businesses in North America. We were able to find a directory, Produce Market Guide, that listed approximately 2,241 businesses in the North American broccoli growing, processing, merchandising, and transporting businesses. We then went through each company's profile to determine and compile the list of broccoli processing and growing businesses (1,143). After which we leveraged company data aggregators like Hoovers, ZoomInfo, Buzzfile, Manta, and Kompass to determine the estimated revenue of these companies. We leveraged company data aggregators in providing the revenue information because the majority of these companies are privately held, and are not under legal compulsion to publish their revenue information. Approximately 204 businesses annual revenue information is not available on the public domain and these include Congelados Don José, Nardelli Bros Inc, JA BLURR FARMS LLC, Comercializadora GAB S A de C V, Casa Macín, Ppep Inc, Ancient Lake Gardens, Three Sisters Farm, Tony Filandrianos, Fairview Gardens, Unity Farm, Weimar Institute Dba Weimar Farm, Rancho La Familia Inc, Synergy Organic Farms, Easter Orchard Farm, Rancho El Huizache, New Beat Farm, Miramonte Farms And Nursery, Well-Pict Oxnard Cold Storage, Hancock Family Farm, Good Seed Organic Farm, and Arnime S A de C V, this information is locked behind a pay wall. Hence, we could not determine the category any of these businesses belongs.

About 286 businesses belong to the small business category, approximately 191 businesses belong to the medium category while about 122 businesses belong to the large category. RESEARCH STRATEGY

The research team started by exploring both South American and international agriculture publications, hoping to find reports on this topic or at least relevant insights. We looked at sources such as America Economia, fao.org, among others. There, general figures regarding peach production in South America were available, such as export and market growth. However, none focused on the number or sizing of business that grows or process peaches.

To estimate this information, we looked for outdated information on the number of businesses that grow peach in South America and the growth rate of the peach market in South America. Our goal here was to find an outdated value and use it together with the market growth rate to estimate the current market size in terms of the number of businesses. To find this information, we searched various South American sources such as agronegocios.co, Produce Blue Book, as well as statistical databases such as Statista. Even after searching for older information, we couldn't locate any relevant information. Information on export, total production, and market growth for some South American regions were available, but information on the number of companies that grow peach wasn't available.

Next, we searched for data on the number of businesses that grow and process peach for each South American country individually, to add together to get the total South American market size. We explored governmental agricultural departments such as Secretaria de Agricultura Bolivar, Confederação da Agricultura e Pecuária do Brasil as well as country-specific agricultural industry research sites such as NUSO, CNA Brasil, among others. There, we reviewed agriculture industry reports that focus on specific countries, like the Informe de la Industria de Maquinaria Agrícola, to find the number of businesses that are active in growing and processing peach. Information specific to growth, exports, and key players in the peach products industry was available. However, no information surrounding the number of peach agribusinesses was mentioned for any of the countries.

As a last resort, we decided to search for the number of peach farms in South America, to use this information as a proxy for the number of peach agribusinesses, assuming each farm is one business. Even after looking through country-specific publications and agricultural databases, such as IEA, Datos Abiertos, among others. We were not able to find any data on the total number of plantations that are specifically utilized for peach cultivation.
