South Korea Car Market - Redo

The South Korean car market includes both new and used vehicles sold in a given year. A calculation of its size in USD involves the estimation of the average price for new and used cars in South Korea, as ready-made data is not available freely. The number of units sold times the average price gives the total market value of the car market in South Korea. The sections below explain how each value was calculated or obtained. The attached document includes all this data.

Total number of new passenger vehicle transactions in the country

In 2016, the number of new light vehicle sales in South Korea was 1,813,851 units; according to IHS Markit. That represented a drop of 0.4% compared to 2015. The market leaders in 2016 were Hyundai and KIA, who captured over half the market with respectively 658,642 and 535, 000 new light vehicles sold in 2016 in South Korea. The exact percentage is 658642+535000/1813851=65.81%.

Average price for new vehicle transactions

For the first ten months of 2016, the top five selling new cars in South Korea were:
2. Porter small commercial truck
3. Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan

All these cars sold roughly the same number of units in the first ten months of 2016, with respectively 78,253; 78,115; 69,039; 67,060 and 64,423. Given the lack of information or data freely available on the average price of a new car in South Korea, the price of an average new car can be estimated from the average price of these five most popular models in the country.

The starting price of a new Hyundai Avante is ₩ 13.840 million.
The starting price of a new Hyundai Porter is ₩ 14.3 million.
The starting price of a Hyundai Sonata is ₩ 22.040 million.
The starting price of a new KIA Sorento is ₩ 27.140 million.
The starting price for a new Chevrolet Spark is ₩ 10.150 million.

The average price for these top selling five models is (13.84+14.3+22.04+27.14+10.15)/5=17.495

This means that using an average of the prices of the top 5 new top-selling cars in South Korea, the estimate of the price of an average new car is around ₩ 17.494 million.

When using an online currency converter to transfer South Korean WON into USD, this amounts to 16,437 USD.

Total number of used passenger vehicle transactions

The South Korean news agency Yonhap News reported that 3.78 million used cars were traded in South Korea in 2016, according to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This represented a rise compared to 2015 with 3.66 million cars traded that year.

Average price for used vehicle transactions (cars and light trucks)

Given the lack of data concerning the average price of a used vehicle in South Korea, an estimate has to be constructed using various sources. The first one is from Statista with a forecast of $5.68 Billion used car sales in 2016. Given that the number of units sold was 3.78 million in that year, the average price can be calculated by dividing the total sales by the number of units sold. First, billions need to be converted into millions so 5.68 billion = 5,680 million. This gives 5,680/3.78=1503. Using Statista's forecast figures for 2016 and the official number of used cars sold in the same year, the estimate of the average price of a used car in South Korea is $1503.

The other source used is a living abroad blog that estimates the cost of living in South Korea. Its estimation of a used car in South Korea is between $1200 and $3500. The average of these two prices gives 1200+3500/2=2350. Given that the average price derived from Statista is $1503 and the average price from the blog is around $2350, the final average can be calculated using the two sources to find an estimate of 1503+2350/2 = 1926. Given the data and information available, the best estimate for the price of an average used car in South Korea is $1926.

Total market size for new and used passenger vehicles

The total market size for new and used cars in South Korea can be calculated by multiplying the number of new cars sold with the average price and adding this number to the number of used cars sold times their average price, for 2016 in South Korea.

This gives (1,813,851*16,437)+(3,660,000*1926) = 29 814 268 887 + 7 049 160 000 = 36 863 428 887 USD.

Therefore, the total market size for used and new cars in South Korea in 2016 was estimated at 36,863,428,887 USD or 36.86 billion USD.

Conclusion

The total market size of the used and new car market in South Korea in 2016 has been estimated at 36.86 billion USD.
The information about the passenger vehicle market in South Korea has been included in the attached spreadsheet.

Indonesia Car Market - Redo

Combined, the new and used car market in Indonesia was worth just over $88 billion in 2016. I've added this information, as well as the number of sales and average price for both new and used cars that year, to your attached spreadsheet. Read on for some additional notes!

FINDINGS

In 2016 (the most recent full year for which data is available), 1,061,859 new cars were sold in Indonesia. Based on the source, we assume that figure includes all passenger vehicles (cars, light trucks, SUVs, etc.). That same year, 380,000 used cars sold per month for a total of 4,560,000 (380,000 x 12).

To calculate the average new car price, I used this market report, which lists average prices for the two most popular cars in four different categories. According to their figures, average new car prices are as follows:

The average price for a multi-purpose vehicle is $14,500 ($14,000 + $15,000 / 2)
The average price for an SUV is $25,000 ($18,000 + $32,000 / 2)
The average price for a low-cost green vehicle is $10,500 ($9,000 + $12,000 / 2)
The average price for a sedan is $22,000 ($21,000 + $23,000 / 2)

All together, the average price for a new car in Indonesia in 2016 was $18,000 (($14,500 + $25,000 + $10,500 + $22,000) / 4). Multiplied by the number of new cars sold that year, the total market for new cars in Indonesia in 2016 was $19,113,462,000.

The market report that put the number of used vehicles sold at 4,560,000 in 2016 also claimed a $35 billion market value for the Indonesian used car market. However, that would put the average price of a used car in Indonesia at just $7,675 US ($35 billion / 4.56 million). I found a source from the end of 2015 that put the average price of a used car in Indonesia at 202 million Indonesian rupiah, or $15,170. I've used this latter figure to estimate the market size, as it seems unlikely that the average price would fall by more than half in just a year.

Given those estimates, the used car market in Indonesia was worth $69,175,200,000 in 2016. Together, the new and used car markets were worth $88,288,662,000 in 2016.

CONCLUSION

I've completed the section of your spreadsheet covering Indonesia's new and used car market. All told, this market was worth over $88 billion in 2016 (the most recent year for which full-year sales data is available).

Australia Motorbike Market

We were unable to find workable data on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. Owing to this, we have used various other credible sources to find or estimate the required values. The market size of the new and used motorbike market in Australia is $1.296 billion USD. A total of 104,111 new motorbikes were sold in the calendar year 2017, at an estimated average price of $4,309 USD; and an estimated 567,192 units of used motorbikes were sold at an average price of $1,494 USD in the same period.

METHODOLOGY

Motorbikes referred to in this report include on-road bikes, off-road bikes, ATVs and scooters. Also, motorbikes and motorcycles have been used interchangeably in this report.
Monthly sales figures provided on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website exclude motorcycle sales. The only other data available is the number of total motorcycle registrations.
Total number of motorcycles registered in Australia as of 31st Jan 2016 = 828,965 units.
Total number of motorcycles registered in Australia as of 31st Jan 2017 = 849,296 units.
Therefore, the number of new motorcycles that were registered between 1st Feb 2016 and 31st Jan 2017 = 849,296 – 828,965 = 20,331 units.
If we assume that the increase in the number of motorcycles registered is equal to the number of new motorcycles sold between 1st Feb 2016 and 31st Jan 2017, then the number of new motorbikes sold between 1st Feb 2016 and 31st Jan 2017 also equals 20,331 units.
However, this value is less than 20% of the total motorcycle sales figure obtained from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (Australia), which puts the new motorbike sales number for the calendar year 2016 and calendar year 2017 at 114,770 and 104,111 units, respectively.

The disparity would appear to be due in part to vehicle registration requirements between those used on road and those used off road. Off road bikes, ATVs and some scooters do not require registration.
Given the disparity in the number of new motorbikes sold in a period and the number of new motorbikes registered in the same period, we choose to use the actual count of new motorbikes sold (104,111 units), as against the number of new motorbikes registered (20,331 units). Also, 104,111 units is closer to numbers stated by other credible sources.
The Australian motorbike dealer industry revenue from the sale of used and new motorbikes is estimated to be $1.6 billion AUD ($1.296 billion USD as of 26th Jan 2018) for the Financial Year beginning 1st July 2016 and ending 30th June 2017.

Please note that the Australian financial year period and the calendar year period are different. However, we have assumed that the market size for the calendar year 2017 remains the same as the 2016-17 financial year period.

The basis of this assumption is that six months (from Jan 1st 2017 to 30th June 2017) are common to both periods; and an increase in commodity prices in 2017 would have resulted in an increase in the price of motorbikes (increase in raw material prices would be passed on to the consumer), which would counter the dip in industry revenue numbers.
The percentage of total revenue that an average dealership generates through sales of new motorbikes and used motorbikes is 9% and 17% respectively.
Therefore, the revenue from sales of new motorbikes in 2017 = 9/ (9+17) * 1.296 billion USD = $448.6 million USD.
And the revenue generated from sales of used motorbikes in 2017 = 17/ (9+17) * 1.296 billion USD = $847.4 million USD.
The average price of a new motorbike in 2017 = Revenue generated from sale of new motorbikes in 2017 / number of new motorbikes sold in 2017.
Therefore, the average price of a new motorbike in 2017 = 448.6 million USD / 104,111 = $4,309 USD.
Since we could not find the average duration of time or the average distance after which a used motorbike is sold in the Australian market, we have assumed that the average motorbike is sold after five years/100,000 kilometers (62,137 miles) of use. To determine the average price of a used motorbike (five years/62,137 miles) we first need to calculate the average depreciation in the value of the motorbike.

The average residual value (after depreciation) of a motorbike is 34.67%. The calculations for the same have been shown in the attached spreadsheet.

Average price of a used motorbike in 2017 = The residual value of an old motorbike (five years/62,137 miles) in 2017 * the average price of a new motorbike in 2017.

Therefore, the average price of a used motorbike in 2017 = 34.67% *4,309 USD= $1,494 USD.

The total number of used motorbikes sold in 2017 = Total revenue generated from the sale of used motorbikes in 2017 / average price of a used motorbike in 2017.

Therefore, the total number of used motorbikes sold in 2017 = 847.4 million USD/ 1,494 USD = 567,192 units.

As required, all values have been entered in the attached spreadsheet.

CONCLUSION

The number of new motorbikes sold in the calendar year 2017 is equal to 104,111 units, at an estimated average price of $4,309 USD. We estimate that 567,192 units of used motorbikes were sold in the calendar year 2017, at an average price of $1,494 USD. The combined market size for the new and used motorbike industry in Australia is $1.296 billion USD.

South Korea Motorbike Market

The South Korean motorbike market is not currently cohesively studied or reported on. For this reason, estimates need to be made in order to calculate market sizing and average sales prices. The requested information has been entered into a spreadsheet. Below is an explanation for how these figures were arrived at.

MARKET SIZE
According to Honda Korea, 20% of the market size for new motorcycles in South Korea is 18,000 units. To arrive at a number for the market as a whole, 16,000 was multiplied by 5 to arrive at 80,000 units. Additionally, there is some data from 2016 indicating that Honda Korea sold 1,177 of its high-end motorcycles in South Korea and Harley Davidson and BMW sold 3,964 high-end motorcycles. This puts high-end vehicles at roughly 15% of all new motorbike sales.

Unfortunately, there is no data available for used motorbike sales. This information is likely not collected, tracked, or reported on at this time. In this motorcycle market report there may be statistics on used motorcycles available; however, the report is not free. This report may be of interest if there are funds available to purchase it.

AVERAGE PRICES
To calculate the average prices for new and used motorcycles required triangulation of data. There are no official reports with segmentation for new and used motorcycles that give average prices. For this reason, the data for new motorbikes was based off of an article from 2014 written by a resident of South Korea. This data is older than two years but is the most recent reporting on pricing that could be found. The author is knowledgeable about motorcycles and gives a range of prices for someone seeking new motorbikes. I simply took the average for high-end (8 million won, which converts to $7,508 USD) and low-end (1.5 million won, which converts to $1,407 USD) prices given and averaged them together to come up with $4,458 USD.

For pricing on used motorbikes I consulted the sales site Alibaba. Currently there are 270 motorbikes listed for sale on the site. By adding each listing's price together and dividing by 270, the average price arrived at is $347.22 USD. This snapshot of the used motorbike market is used in the spreadsheet as it is assumed that this is representative of the general market.

OVERALL MARKET INFORMATION
9% of households in South Korea own a motorbike, which is one of the lowest rates among Asian countries. According to the South Korean government's census there were 19,840,000 households in 2016. Nine percent of this figure gives an estimated total of 1,785,600 motorbikes currently owned in the country. The South Korean government reported 62,299,000,000 won in annual sales for land transportation in 2016. This converts to $58,473,630 USD. If you use 9% as an estimate for the market share of motorbikes among all land transportation based on ownership statistics, this produces a figure of $5,262,623 USD as an estimation of the market size for new and used motorbikes in 2016.

In conclusion, most of the data for the South Korean motorbike market is based on triangulation because this information is not formally tracked or reported. All estimations have been explained here. The requested information has been entered into the spreadsheet.

UK Motorbike Market

In the UK, sales of new motorbikes, defined as any 2-wheeled motorized vehicle, were estimated at 105,467 units, down from 2016's total of 128,644 units. By using the pricing of the five highest-selling bikes, an average price for new motorbikes was estimated at
$16,682.60, and the total 2017 new bike sales revenue was estimated at $2,143,163,574. Data has been entered in the attached spreadsheet, and a summary of that data and explanation of all calculations used are below.

USED MOTORBIKES

The number of used motorbike transactions is unknown. However, the number of total motorbikes licensed in 2016 was 5,216,300, according to the government database (found in Table VEH0301). By subtracting the total number of new motorbike transactions, the total number of used motorbikes in 2016 is calculated at 5,087,656. Further, a meaningful average price per used bike is not possible to accurately gauge, with huge variation in used motorbike pricing factors such as condition and age of each unit. On one online marketplace, Auto Trader, over 19,000 used bikes are currently for sale, with prices ranging from £100 ($141.85) to £219,995 ($312,071.71). Narrowing down the offerings to a radius of only ten miles still left 415 options, with a price range from £395 ($560.32) to £34,995 ($49,643.21). With such wide ranges in pricing, further narrowing to get a reasonable number of bikes to average would be necessary, and would require information not available, such as the percentage of used bike sales from various categories such as age, size, style, and model.

NEW MOTORBIKES

For new motorbikes, better information is available via industry tracking of new motorbike registrations. In 2017, the UK National Motorcycle Dealers Association reported sales of 105,467 units. Using the published pricing of each of the five motorbikes with the highest units sold, a reasonable estimate of the average price of a new motorbike in the UK can be found. Below are the five models and their prices, with prices converted to USD.

Adding these five prices and dividing that by five gives an average price of $16,682.60, and multiplying that average by the 105,467 total units sold gives total new motorbike sales revenue of $2,143,163,574.

CONCLUSION

Used motorbikes licensed in the UK in 2016 was 5,087,656. However, the average price of these bikes is not available. There were 105,467 new motorbikes sold in the UK in 2017, at an estimated average price of $16,682.60 and total sales revenue of $2,143,163,574. The data has been entered in the attached spreadsheet.

Indonesia Motorbike Market

The number of new motorbikes sold in 2016 in Indonesia was 5.9 million at an average price of USD 1,781.07. This is dwarfed in numbers by the 13.3 million used motorcycles sold in that same year at an average price of USD 623.37. This gives a combined market size of USD 18.8 billion.

The market and price information has been added to this spreadsheet, row 6. Combined with the total market size for cars in Indonesia, the total market size for passenger vehicles is USD 107.1 billion.

CALCULATIONS
All Indonesian monetary amounts in Rupiah were converted to USD using the conversion factor of 13,303 Rupiah to 1 USD.

In 2016, 5.9 million new motorcycles were sold. No exact number could be found, but it was determined that used vehicle sales greatly surpass those of new vehicles in Indonesia. The percentages of new to used were utilized to calculate an estimate for the number of used motorcycles sold.

In Jakarta, 61% of sales were for preowned vehicles. This ratio increased away from the capital as disposable income amounts dropped, with other cities seeing 69% of sales being used while rural areas had close to 78% of sales pertaining to used vehicles. An average of these percentages was calculated to determine used sales for the country as a whole.
(61+69+78)/3= 69.3% used
100%-69.3%= 30.7% of sales were for new vehicles.

The number of used motorbikes sold was then estimated as follows:

5.9 million new motorbikes= 0.307* (total number of new and used)

This gives a total number of units of 19,218,241. Thus,

19,218,241-5,900,000= 13,318,241 estimated number of used units.

To determine the average price of new motorbikes, the top three most popular bikes' prices were averaged. These bikes were all from the two largest brands in the country, Honda and Yamaha, suggesting they are an accurate representation for the market.

(26,300,000 + 17,800,000 + 27,000,000)/3 = 23,700,000 Rupiah

Converted to USD, this is USD 1,781.07 as an average price for new motorbikes.

No average price for used motorbikes was reported for Indonesia as a whole. However, it has been found that used motorcycles are sold at 30-40% of their original value. Using 35% as a median value, the estimated average price for used motorbikes is as follows:

0.35* 1,781.07= USD 623.37

These average prices and number of units were used to calculate the market size for both new and used motorbikes:

USD 1,781.07 * 5.9 million= USD 10,507,900,000 new market size

USD 623.37 * 13,318,241= USD 8,297,264,143 used market size

Combined, that gives a new and used motorcycle market size of USD 18,805,164,143.

CONCLUSIONS
The market size for new and used motorbikes in Indonesia has been calculated based on average prices and number of units sold. The information has been added to this spreadsheet.

Brazil Motorbike Market

To find the number of new and used motorbikes sold in Brazil, and the average price for each, we used data from multiple sales reporting agencies, prices from the Yamaha and Honda websites, and prices from the online market Mercado Livre. The data for number of used motorbikes sold was triangulated based on motorbike sales from last year. The data for average price of a new bike was based on the most popular models sold in 2017 from Yamaha and Honda and their relative weight to all units sold. The average price for a used motorbike was calculated using the price category ranges on Mercado Livre and the average of the highest average price and the lowest average price. The results have been included in this Google Sheet. Below, you will find an explanation of all my calculations.

New units sold

According to the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters, and Bicycles (Abraciclo), in 2017 retail sales of motorbikes reached 847,000. It was unclear if this included used bikes, but in the first half of 2017, the top 5 motorcycle brands sold 406,702 units, representing 95.18% of the market. Total units sold for the first half of 2017 would then be: (406,702)/.9518 = 427,297 units. If we double this number to estimate the total 2017 new units sold, that would equal 854,594 units. This confirms that 847,000 is most probably the total number of new motorbikes sold in 2017.

Average price for new unit

An average price for a new motorbike was not available, but we were able to calculate one based on the average price ranges from the most popular motorbike brands. Yamaha and Honda control 91.5% of the motorbike market in Brazil. I found the most popular units sold by Yamaha and Honda in several motorbike categories and weighted each models price by its percentage makeup of the total units sold. For example, Honda sold 115,374 CG 160 units, which accounts for 13.62% of all new units sold.

115,374 Honda CG 160s sold / 847,000 total units sold = .1362

Therefore, the price of a CG 160 accounted for 13.62% of the average price of a new unit. Similarly, the price of a Yamaha Factor 150 accounted for 1.34% of the average price of a new unit.

11,316 Yamaha Factor 150s sold/ 847,000 total units sold = .0134

The total amount of Hondas and Yamahas on this most popular list accounted for 43.13% of all new units sold. For the calculations, I included every Honda or Yamaha model that appeared, excluding the "custom" category and the Yamaha XTZ 250 and Honda Pop 100 models for which no price was listed on either of their websites. After weighting all the units' prices relative to their percent makeup of total units sold, the sum of these was R$4,182, which is 43.13% of R$9,697. In USD, this is $3,097.

Used units sold

To estimate used motorbike units sold in 2017, we used numbers from 2016 for mid-year sales and total year sales. In 2016, 2.81 million used motorbikes were sold; mid-year this number was 1.33 million. This means 47.33% of used motorbikes were sold in the first half of the year, and 52.67% in the second half.

1.33 million units by mid-year/ 2.81 million units total = .4733

In the first half of 2017, 1.39 million used motorbikes were sold. If the same ratio holds true from the year before, then (1390000)/.4733 = 2,936,826. An estimated 2.94 million used motorbikes were sold in 2017.

Average price of used unit

Finding the average price of a used motorbike was more nebulous. Based on motorbike sales on Mercado Livre, an online site for buying and selling items, bikes under R$5,500 made up 28.5% of listings, between R$5,500 and R$7,500 made up 33.1%, and over R$7,500 made up 38.2%. Using the same method as the one for new bikes, I weighted the highest price of a bike in each category and the lowest price (excluding outliers of a few bikes prices much lower or higher than the others), added these together, and then took the average for this range.

Average price using the lowest price in each category:
R$2,900 x 28.5% = R$829
R$5,500 x 33.1% = R$1,823
R$7,500 x 38.2% = R$2,870
R$829 + R$1,823 + R$2,870 = R$5,522

Average price using the highest price in each category:
R$5,500 x 28.5% = R$1,572
R$7,500 x 33.1% = R$2,486
R$12,900 x 38.2% = R$4,936
R$1,572 + R$2,486 + R$4,936 = R$8,995

Averaging the lowest possible average and the highest possible average for a true average:
(R$5,522 + R$8,995)/2 = R$7,258

In USD this is $2,304.

Total market size

847,000 new units x $3,097 per new unit = $2,623,159,000
2,940,000 used units x $2,304 per used unit = $6,773,760,000

The total market size for new and used motorbikes in Brazil is around $9.39 billion.

Conclusion

After some triangulation, we have confirmed the number of new and used motorbikes sold in Brazil in 2017 and the average price for a new and used motorbike. The total number of new motorbikes sold in Brazil in 2017 was 847,000, and the total number of used motorbikes sold was 2.94 million. The average price for a new motorbike is $3,097 and the average price for a used motorbike is $2,304. The total market size for new and used motorbikes in Brazil is $9.39 billion.

India Motorbike Market

While there is no pre-existing information to fully answer your question, we've used the available data to pull together key findings: I was able to locate that 17,589,511 motorbikes were sold from 2016-2017. This includes both new and used, since there was no specific breakdown published. I was also able to triangulate that the average cost of a new motorbike in India was $889.16. Below, you'll find an outline of our research methodology to better understand why information you've requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into our findings.

METHODOLOGY

I conducted an exhaustive search of government websites, market reports, white papers and trusted media sites. Unfortunately, the only information published with regard to the Indian motorbike market was that 17,589,511 motorbikes were sold from 2016-2017. I was able to triangulate that the average cost of a new motorbike in India was $889.16. I concluded this by first locating the top selling models in India, which were as follows:

1. Hero Splendor- average price of 47,930 Rupee
2. Hero HF Deluxe - average price of 45,997 Rupee
3. Hero Passion - average price of 51,446 – 54,594 (106040/2 = 53020 Rupee)
4. Honda CB Shine - average price of 56,429 – 61,648 (118077/2 =59,038 Rupee)
5. Bajaj Pulsar- average price of 76,723 Rupee

(47,930+45,997+53,020+59,038+76,723= 282,708/5=
56,541.6 Rupee)

56,541.6 Rupee = 889.16 USD

I was unable to do a triangulation for used motor bikes due to a discrepancy, in price between years and lack of information on other variables that would be necessary to make an accurate assumption. The total market size was only published in units. It would be inaccurate to multiple the units by average price, hence it was only available for new models.

HELPFUL FINDINGS

Total units sold- 17,589,511 units (This includes both new and used. There was no specific breakdown available.)
Average price of a new motorbike in India- $889.16

The complete details of my research findings have been organized in the attached spreadsheet.

CONCLUSION
I apologize that the information you inquired was not published. I was able to find the total units sold and the average price of a new motorbike in India. I hope that you find this useful.
